Charge Separation

Lightning begins with the separation of electrical charges within storm clouds. Rising warm air carries water droplets upward while falling precipitation creates air currents. This motion causes collisions between particles, generating positive charges at cloud tops and negative charges at cloud bases. The charge difference can reach millions of volts, creating strong electric fields between clouds and ground.

Discharge Process

When the electric field becomes strong enough, it ionizes air molecules, creating a conductive path called a stepped leader. This invisible channel moves downward in steps, seeking the path of least resistance. As it nears the ground, positively charged streamers rise from objects below. When leader and streamer connect, a powerful return stroke carries current upward, creating the visible lightning flash.

Types and Effects

Lightning occurs in several forms: cloud-to-ground, cloud-to-cloud, and intra-cloud. Each strike can heat surrounding air to temperatures hotter than the sun's surface, creating thunder through rapid air expansion.
